Some people who use antivirus software may have noticed that they usually come with a whole bunch of features they never want to use.

Obviously, all these features are very welcomed in most cases, because that means that your computer will be doing everything in its power to eradicate unwelcome visitors (whether they are human or programmed by humans).

Some people may prefer dealing with a simple antivirus that's easy to follow and command, and that will do its job in no time.

One of the simplest antivirus tools that you'll find on the current market is RemoveIT Pro.

RemoveIT Pro doesn't have any special features, and its interface is extremely easy to follow and use, in comparison with other tools in its area.

The interface has a standard window, and a few options on the right side.

Either choose to Scan for Viruses, Update, Process Manager, Services Manager, Startup Files, Full Report Bug, Report Bug or Virus, and Quarantine.

Once you have opted for virus scanning, RemoveIT Pro informs you that it shall be looking for for viruses, malware, worms, spyware, and adware. This means that your internet browsers should be closed, of course.

The scanning time is amazingly fast in full mode. Then again, RemoveIT Pro also says that the trial version comes with a simple scanning system, while the complete version uses more advanced technologies.

Once the antivirus has found threats, it will recommend you to "Fix" the problems. The other option is to add the respective files to quarantine.

Moreover, RemoveIT Pro also prompts you if you are interested in sending the log file to the manufacturer, in order to be studied and analyzed.

Process Manager is a tool that displays the current active processes on your computer, with the possibility to "end task" if you are enable to do so in Windows' Task Manager, as well as delete the respective processes from your hard drive.

Services Manager shows the current software installed on your computer, and you can choose to start, stop, or restart the service, while in Startup Files you can remove any software that are automatically initiated during system startup.

CPU and memory resources are normally used, and we couldn't find any bugs or errors during our quick overview of RemoveIT Pro.

With all these considered, if you wish for a simple antivirus software with limited but effective options, then you should give RemoveIT Pro a chance.

The installation process is done in a flash, so you'll be face to face with its interface in seconds. Its looks are pretty decent and can be easily customized using the many available styles.

To start with, you should note that it does not provide active protection, heuristic scans or an active shield of some sort. This utility will only search for baddies currently loaded in the memory or running processes that are infected. A word of advice, you should update the malware signature database prior to launching every scan, to make sure no new threats are missed.

The actual process of searching for lurking dangers takes a few seconds, literally. Because the scanner is signature-based, it will only seek for and destroy any viruses that are included in its database with over 10,000 definitions.

Malware Destroyer is bent on exterminating a whole array of threats that include adware, trojans, worms, dialers, trackware and other forms of spyware. A neat feature is the remote scanning capability that will allow you to check computers on your network for infections. All you need are the appropriate credentials to connect to those hosts.

The array of customizable settings is quite impressive, featuring in-depth scan rules configurations, threat scan scope selection and detailed results management. This application can also detect if a shield product is installed onto your system and you'll be able to easily set the scanning criteria for these programs as well.

If no malware is found on your system after scanning it with this utility, like it happened during out tests, it doesn't necessarily mean that everything's good. It's better to ask for a second opinion from your main security program, just to be on the safe side.

Malware Destroyer is designed for manual virus checks and the fast scans recommend it, but bear in mind that it is mainly aimed at non-techy users and will only provide an occasional supplemental layer of protection.

Exterminate It! Is part of the new group of apps that comes to fight against the leaders of the security software team, trying to offer users what they need the most: advanced detection, real-time protection and regular updates.

And although it may all sound like milk and honey, it’s not, because Exterminate It! lacks some important features that are crucial when trying to guard a vulnerable computer.

The interface is indeed very easy to use, because all things are nicely organized in a bullet list, letting you start a scan, update, or check the options for some configuration tools.

While the options menu has only a few settings mostly related to Internet connection configuration and AntiRootkit tools, the scanning process is just basic.

There’s only one scanning mode that will check the whole computer for malicious files, which means there’s no option to look into just one folder or scan a given drive.

The good thing is that Exterminate It! scans the computer very fast and although it calls itself an antivirus, it’s mostly designed to detect spyware files and remove them entirely.

It is indeed very friendly with computer resources, so you can safely use it on older machines too, but keep in mind that you may notice some computer slowdowns in performance when updating definitions.

Although it does have a help menu, documentation isn’t stored locally, so you will need an Internet connection to find out more information on the application.

Overall, Exterminate It! is a nice attempt to safeguard computers around the world, but given the price, it’s better to choose an app that already made a name for itself.

Having an antivirus solution installed on the computer is definitely a necessity to ensure that one's PC is protected against malware attacks and infections. However, this protection can be doubled by a specialized removal tool, such as McAfee AVERT Stinger.

This application is meant to detect and remove a number of viruses easier than a traditional antivirus solution, without needing any intricate configuration.

McAfee AVERT Stinger does not require users to install it on their PC, which comes in quite handy, especially considering that viruses often attempt to block installation of security tools. It is delivered as a stand-alone executable file that can be directly double-clicked for running.

The interface is minimal and no user should have any problems using it. There are only a few buttons at the top of main and only window, one of which is the Preferences one, window that gives access to several settings regarding the application.

McAfee AVERT Stinger is a straightforward tool that is developed specifically to fight against certain types of infections. It can detect multiple Autorun viruses, but also Generic Downloaders and FakeAlert infections.

The scanning process can take a while to complete, but it depends on the amount of data stored on the computer – a full hard disk might even require more than an hour or two for a complete scan to finish. The duration of a scan is also influenced by the sensitivity level set by the user for the heuristic network check, as well as the targets McAfee AVERT Stinger is meant to process.

The application is not quite friendly with computer resources and probably it was not even supposed to be considering its only job is to detect viruses and kill them all.

As a conclusion, those who are struggling to get rid of a virus that cannot be removed by any stand-alone antivirus solution, McAfee AVERT Stinger is a freeware tool that can be worth a try.

Dr. Web CureIt! is, just like its name suggests, an application designed to cure your computer and clean the infected files, regardless if we’re talking about spyware or viruses.

One of the greatest things about this downloadable software is that it doesn’t need to be installed.

There are three scanning modes available, “Express”, “Complete” and “Custom”, with a short explanation provided in the right panel right in the main window.

The “Express” mode for example will scan random access memory, boot sectors of all disks, startup objects, boot disk root directory, root Windows folder, Windows system folder, user documents folder, system temporary folder and user temporary folder.

It’s being delivered as an executable file that needs just a double click to be launched which, in some cases, is the only viable solution. Viruses and spyware are often trying to block installation of new antiviruses and security software, so this is indeed a major advantage.

On the contrary, probably the worst thing about Dr. WEB CureIt! is its interface. It’s boring to say the least, and the user is assaulted with multiple splash screens, as the software loads in the background.

During our test, the scanning process took a while, especially when we gave the complete scan mode a spin, but this way we got sure that the whole computer was entirely clean.

The application isn’t too heavy on computer resources, so scanning the drives and working on your machine at the same time isn’t a problem at all, although we won't recommend that until the scanning process comes to an end.

All in all, Dr. Web CureIt! is the kind of tool that struggles to impress, but there’s still a lot of work to do. Permanent protection is mandatory for such a tool, while a modern interface and stylish look would likely attract many more users.

What is an IP address?

Every device connected to the public Internet is assigned a unique number known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses consist of four numbers separated by periods (also called a 'dotted-quad') and look something like 127.0.0.1.

Since these numbers are usually assigned to internet service providers within region-based blocks, an IP address can often be used to identify the region or country from which a computer is connecting to the Internet. An IP address can sometimes be used to show the user's general location.

Because the numbers may be tedious to deal with, an IP address may also be assigned to a Host name, which is sometimes easier to remember. Hostnames may be looked up to find IP addresses, and vice-versa. At one time ISPs issued one IP address to each user. These are called static IP addresses. Because there is a limited number of IP addresses and with increased usage of the internet ISPs now issue IP addresses in a dynamic fashion out of a pool of IP addresses (Using DHCP). These are referred to as dynamic IP addresses. This also limits the ability of the user to host websites, mail servers, ftp servers, etc. In addition to users connecting to the internet, with virtual hosting, a single machine can act like multiple machines (with multiple domain names and IP addresses).

Compared to just about all the other downloaders CNET has. This is the only one that outperforms all of them. Believe me i have tried them all. The highest I got on download is 1.2 mb per second and usual is around 745 to 800 kb. It does get slower at times but usually during high bandwidth usage and heavy internet usage but I am very pleased with this program. Give it a try. i think you will be amazed.

VideoLAN is happy to announce DVBlast 2.0, the fourth major release of DVBlast. It fixes a number of issues, such as packet bursts and CAM communication problems, adds more configuration options, and improves dvblastctl with stream information. It also gets rid of the runtime dependency on libdvbpsi thanks to biTStream.
VideoLAN is also happy to introduce the first public release ofbiTStream, a set of C headers allowing a simpler access (read and write) to binary structures such as specified by MPEG, DVB, IETF, etc... It is released under the MIT license to avoid readability concerns being shadowed by license issues. It already has a pretty decent support of MPEG systems packet structures, MPEG PSI, DVB SI, DVB simulcast and IETF RTP.
