Intel High Definition Audio (HD Audio or also known as Azalia) refers to the specifications published by Intel in 2004 to deliver high-definition audio, which is capable of playing several channels at higher quality than previous integrated audio AC’97 as codecs. During the development was named Azalia.
Equipment based on Intel HD Audio specifications is capable of delivering 192 kHz 32-bit quality for two channels and 96 kHz at 32 bits to eight channels. However, as of 2008 [update], most audio manufacturers are not fully implement the high-end specifications, including the sampling resolution of 32 bits.
Microsoft Windows XP SP3 and later versions of Windows include a Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) class driver for audio devices built into the specification HD audio support. There are UAA drivers for Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2. Mac OS X has full support of the AppleHDA driver. Linux also supports the Intel HDA, like OpenSolaris, FreeBSD , NetBSD and OpenBSD systems.
As AC’97, HD Audio architecture is a specification, the link frame format, and programming interfaces used by the controller on the PCI bus and codec on ??the other side of the link sets. The host controller implementations are available for a minimum of Intel, Nvidia and AMD. The codecs can be used with these controllers are available from many companies, including Realtek, Conexant Analog Devices (SoundMAX), Integrated Device Technology (IDT) (adapted from SigmaTel), VIA, Wolfson Microelectronics, and the old C-Media
